Two patients with rheumatoid arthritis without splenomegaly or Felty's syndrome developed spontaneous rupture of the spleen. The histological appearance was consistent with involvement of the splenic capsule by the rheumatoid process, and this may have predisposed to splenic rupture.

Autopsy showed vasculitis of several major epicardial coronary arteries. Two cases of anaerobic, pyogenic arthritis complicating rheumatoid disease due to bacteroides are described. The relative well-being of the patients and indolence of the affected joints are emphasised, and the effective role of metronidazole in the treatment of septic arthritis due to bacteroides is discussed.
